Are you a true music lover? Find out yourself.
“Studies show that problems with illegal downloading are highest among 18-24 year old. So we’re looking at a preventive approach, informing children at an early age of the proper use of technology” – Once during a conversation with a teacher the student asked if a song was worth rupees 12? To be precise, he said, “Isn’t that too expensive?” The teacher answered, “No, not at all. A lot goes into a song from the time the lyrics are written to the time when the song is out”. The student asked, “What all goes into a song and what’s wrong with downloading it for free?” The teacher told the student, “Well, many people including the producer, musicians, lyricists, recording engineers and retailers work together to make a song sound professional. Your one unethical step of downloading music illegally affects all these people. You listen to a song to be entertained but for these people it is their livelihood.” The teacher also told his student that a true music lover should support and respect artists and upcoming bands. “In US and Europe the music scene is quite thriving and a very large percentage of US GDP comes from music. Even if there is a local band, people support them like anything. People there even pay for the web concerts. If our one billion population of India also starts supporting the upcoming artists, India’s music scene will definitely level up soon”
- Anurag Dixit “How great musicians demonstrate a mutual respect and trust on the bandstand can alter your outlook on the world and enrich every aspect of your life, understanding what it means to be a global citizen in the most modern sense” - Wynton Marsalis The student then asked, “Sir, what else should a music lover do?” The teacher answered, “You learn guitar, right? Where and how do you keep your guitar after practicing?” The student answered, “Sir, I keep my guitar on the guitar stand in its cover, so that it stays protected from dust and so that the strings don’t rust.” To this the teacher patted his student’s back and exclaimed, “That’s exactly what a music lover should do; a music lover must respect his or her instruments.” “In our culture we have such respect for musical instruments, they are like part of God”
– Pandit Ravi Shankar We need this paradigm shift indeed to see Indian music on international charts.
